I am glad to see that Crecy are publishing these updates at a reasonable frequency and I am sure that many readers will be waiting in anticipation for their part of the country to be covered. If you are fortunate enough to be in possession of previous volumes, then you will know that they are a superb reference and the start for any research into the stations and also the aircraft that flew from them.

I suspect that the area covered by this volume is not as familiar to the aviation enthusiast as some of the others might be. Coastal Command stations are, and have been in the public eye for many years. But I am sure that Culmhead (Church Stanton); Somerset will be unknown to many of you. It was opened on August the 1st 1941. It was occupied over the years by a number of fighter squadrons and it closed in August 1946 as an airfield. It is now a business centre but if you look around you will still see evidence of its past use. This sort of information is what this book is all about and if you want to visit any of these sites then the grid reference and directions will be of help. An enormous amount of research has gone into the books in this series, for instance hands up who can tell me the length of the grass runway at Old Sarum and details of the accommodation? This and other details are given for each station. There is a brief service history and masses of photographs and this is a reference that all students of aviation should have on their bookshelf or even in their glove compartment when travelling the country.
