The Battle of Britain [9780859791472]
Date Added: Tuesday 24. August, 2010
Patrick Stephens first published this book in 1990 and this is a revised and enlarged edition by Crecy. As this is the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain we are going to see a good number of books on this subject this year and I am sure that they will give their own interpretation of it. I know that this is an over used cliché; this one is defiantly different.
For a start the author was they’re as a youngster at the time and he writes with this in mind. He paints a picture of what it was like to live in Britain at that period. Over the years I have forgotten about the multitude of edicts issued by the government, for instance food recipes and ration information. But on the conflict itself you are bombarded with information. There are lists containing detail of all fighter losses and pilot information, detailed information on the Luftwaffe and much much more. But this book is not just about Hurricanes and Spitfires but also all the other aircraft that were involved. Coastal Command played an important part and there are even stories of Anson’s taking on the Bf 109.You will also find plenty of information regarding the German night bombing and the contribution made by Bomber Command at this crucial time.
These are just snippets from this very readable book and thoroughly enjoyable book. This is one that I can recommend, if you want to know what it was really like in those dark days.
