East Riding Airfields [9780954560591]
Date Added: Thursday 29. July, 2010
THIS APPEALING LITTLE book concentrates on the First World War airfields of the East Riding of Yorkshire. Well illustrated with period and recent photographs, maps and colour artwork side elevations of typical aeroplanes, it features the aerodromes of Beverley, Eastburn/Driffield and Hornsea Mere, the landing grounds at Atwick, Barmby Moor, Bellasize, East Heslerton, Hedon, Menthorpe Gate, Owthorne and South Cave and the airship station at Howden, including the mooring-out substation at lowthorpe. A final chapter is devoted to No 2 (Northern) Acceptance Depot at Brough, subsequently taken over by Blackburn Aircraft.
Appendices list units and representative aircraft at the aerodromes and the known casualties of German airship raids on Hull.
Some trouble has been taken to assemble a good collection of appropriate illustrations, a fair number of which will be unfamiliar to most readers. This enhances the book and makes it good value for money.
