I own at least a dozen books on aerial reconnaissance, and this is easily the best one. It covers the strategic rationale for the flights, the targets, the tactics and technology, and includes a list of every known spy flight from 1945 to 1960. There are a large number of excellent maps and photographs. The book contains so many facts of which I was unaware, practically every page had new information. His discussion of command and control of the flights - i.e., was LeMay authorized to make the overflights or was he "out of control" and trying to provoke war as some have claimed - is particularly good. I also liked his analysis of Eisenhower's thinking on overflights and the Soviet reaction to them.

This book is a "must have" for anyone interested in aviation history or Cold War intelligence gathering.
